One of the greatest challenges for the modern parent is finding a way to encourage your kids to get outdoors and active without having to compromise on their safety. While a trampoline is common choice for children in the western world their are concerns over safety as it is easy for a child to break a bone or do serious damage to their neck.
The majority of the risks associated with a trampoline can be mitigated through the choice and location at your house and the appropriate safety features incorporated into the construction of the trampoline.
Safety Tips:
Adult supervision is a must, we all remember the creative things we tried to do on a trampoline when we were children, so its really important that an adult is there to make sure the children are playing safely.
When reasonable try and limit it to one jumper at a time, or if there are more than one at a time discourage flips and other gymnastic manoeuvres as collisions on a trampoline happen high speed and can cause serious injuries.
Children under the age of 6 should not be allowed on trampolines. It shard to say no to our little ones but its important that you put there safety first.
Avoid somersaults and other gymnastic moves wherever possible, domestic trampolines are not designed to support these moves. These moves should be performed on Olympic Trampolines with appropriate supervision and training.
Location, location, location. Put a lot of thought as to where you want to place the trampoline. You should never place trampolines on concrete or near power lines, trees or any other obstacle that could come into contact with a bouncing child.
Use the safety net provided. Trampoline enclosures can help prevent injuries from falls.
Use the safety pads to cover the springs, the easiest way to protect your children is to cover up the big gaps on the side of the trampoline mat!
A trampoline can be a great way to keep your kids fit and a creative way to develop their balance and co-ordination, but make sure that you have the right Trampoline for them, otherwise you can risk injury.
